Speech / Language Pathology
The development and use of speech, language and hearing has significant impact on academic performance, career opportunities and socialization. That's why we are preparing clinical scientists to advance the practice of speech-language pathology and training the next generation of university professors and research scientists.
Graduate Degrees
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the Arnold School of Public Health offers two master's degree programs: a Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MS-Res: residential/on-campus, full time) and a Master of Communication Disorders in Speech-Language Pathology (MS-DE: distance education, part time). Both degrees are accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Graduates are eligible for national certification, state licensure and South Carolina teacher certification.
The the MS-Res program is designed for students who do not have training in the field of speech-language pathology or those who have recently completed an undergraduate degree in speech pathology and are not working in the profession.
The MS-DE is a part-time degree program offered through distance education. The curriculum, course requirements and practicum experiences are identical to the MS-Res program, the only difference being the manner in which content is delivered.
The department also offers a doctoral degree (Ph.D. in communications sciences and disorders) for those interested in scholarly research and who wish to pursue careers in university research and teaching.
The Master of Speech Pathology is a full-time, on-campus program designed for those persons who do not have training in the field of speech-language pathology or those who have recently completed the undergraduate degree in speech pathology and are not working in the profession.

The Master of Communication Disorders in Speech-Language Pathology is a part-time degree program offered through distance education to applicants with or without an undergraduate background in speech pathology. Although students may have to travel to the Columbia campus for four to six weeks during the second summer to participate in their first practicum experience, courses and the practicum are generally provided at sites near the student’s home.
